Is It Just Gas or Something Serious? Understanding Stomach Pain

Your stomach’s acting up — aching, uncomfortable, maybe even downright painful — and you’re left wondering, is it nothing or something to worry about?

Sometimes it’s just a sign you overindulged at dinner. But other times, it’s your body’s way of signaling something more serious. Knowing when to seek care is crucial, especially with stomach viruses on the rise in Ohio this season.

Why Stomach Pain Can Be Tricky

When you say your "stomach" hurts, the pain could actually be coming from any number of organs in your abdomen, and the intensity of the pain doesn’t always match the seriousness of the issue.

This area is home to your stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. To pinpoint the cause, doctors often divide the abdomen into four quadrants:

  1. Upper right: This area includes the liver, gallbladder and parts of the small intestine. Pain here could indicate issues like gallbladder or problems, or bowel obstructions.
  2. Upper left: This quadrant houses the stomach, spleen and parts of the pancreas. Pain in this area might be related to stomach ulcers or spleen issues.
  3. Lower right: This section contains the appendix and parts of the intestines. Sharp pain here is often associated with appendicitis.
  4. Lower left: This area includes parts of the large intestine. Pain here could be linked to conditions like diverticulosis or constipation.

Most Common Causes of Abdominal Pain

Most stomach pain is temporary and often resolves on its own without medical intervention.

Common causes include indigestion or acid reflux, gas and bloating, constipation, food poisoning and stomach flu (gastroenteritis).

Tummy Pain Causes

While these issues are usually mild, they can sometimes escalate. For example, a simple stomach virus can lead to dehydration, which is particularly dangerous for children and older adults.

If your stomach pain is mild and familiar, there are several remedies you can try at home to find relief.

Start by giving your digestive system a break — stick to bland, easy-to-digest foods like crackers or bananas. Staying hydrated is also crucial, especially if you’re experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. Sip water or electrolyte drinks to replenish lost fluids. Applying a warm heating pad to your abdomen can help relax tense muscles and ease cramping. Natural remedies like ginger can soothe indigestion, while peppermint may relieve gas. Over-the-counter options, such as antacids or anti-gas medications, can also be effective, but it’s important to use them as directed.

When To Seek Care

If your pain isn’t letting up or seems to be getting worse, it’s time to get some help especially if your discomfort is joined by fever, nausea, vomiting, painful urination or signs of dehydration like dark urine or feeling lightheaded.

Head straight to the ER if you experience sudden, severe pain, pain that spreads to your chest, neck or shoulder, vomiting blood, a hard or rigid abdomen, trouble breathing, or pain following an injury. These could be signs of a serious condition where every minute matters.
